Local Business Tax Receipts

Welcome to the Town of Medley Licensing Department

Business tax receipts or BTR (formerly known as occupational licenses) vary depending on the nature of the business. A BTR and Certificate of Use is required for each place of business and for each separate classification at the same location.

  • Business Tax Receipts are valid for the duration of the fiscal year: beginning October 1 and expiring on September 30 of the following year, regardless of the issued date. BTRs must be renewed between July 1 - September 30 of each year. Penalty fees will be added to BTRs renewed on October 1st and thereafter.
  • The Business Tax Receipt and Certificate of Use must be displayed conspicuously at your place of business and in such a manner as to be open to the view of the public and subject to inspection by all duly authorized of The Town of Medley officers.
  • The Licensing Dept office must be notified of any changes to the following: business name or ownership, location, number of employees, equipment, machinery, or any other contingency.
  • If the business ceases operation, the owner must notify the Business Tax Receipt Department in writing.

Procedure to obtain a Certificate of Use and Business Tax Receipt for your Business in the Town of Medley

Before the Town of Medley can issue you a Certificate of Use and Business Tax Receipt, our zoning official must first determine if your type of business is allowed in the zone where it is located. If this is allowed then you must get a Certificate of Use AND (step 2) an Annual Fire Permit (step 3) from MIAMI DADE COUNTY BEFORE you apply for a Medley BTR & CU

Step 1a:

  1. Submit a Zoning Verification Form.
  2. The zoning official will determine if your business is allowed in the zone it is located in.
  3. The zoning official will respond to you via email if your business is allowed or not.
  4. BUT you must wait until you get the response. Please do not skip ahead to the steps below without the response. It will only delay the process.
  5. If the response is that your category of business is allowed, then you may proceed with the process below:

Step 1b: The following are the steps to apply for a Miami Dade County Certificate of Use - which is required before applying for the Medley CU
Please fill out a Miami-Dade County Municipal application for a Certificate of Use/Occupational License and email it to biztax@townofmedley.com or submit it in person to the License Office.
A clerk will fill out the bottom portion, sign it and send it back to you along with a blank Town of Medley Business Tax Receipt application and a blank Town of Medley Certificate of Use application, which you will need for step 2.

Step 2 Apply for a Miami Dade County Certificate of Use ONLINE using their online portal - the link is below

You must upload the following documents to the Miami-Dade County Portal https://www.miamidade.gov/Apps/RER/EPSPortal/

  1. Miami Dade County -"Municipal application for Certificate of use/Occupational License"
  2. Town of Medley - "CERTIFICATE OF USE" application
  3. Town of Medley - "BUSINESS TAX RECEIPT" application
  4. Your Lease

*Depending on the type of business you are applying for, DERM may ask you to comply with some of THEIR requirements before they approve the Town of Medley's Business tax receipt application and Town of Medley's Certificate of Use application. Keep in mind, that the Town of Medley cannot issue a Business Tax Receipt and Certificate of Use without a Miami-Dade County Certificate of Use.

Step 3: Contact Miami Dade Fire Dept (786) 331-4800 to apply for a Miami-Dade County Fire Dept Annual Operating permit.

Step 4: When you complete the process with Miami Dade County DERM and receive the Miami Dade County Certificate of Use and the Fire Permit, please submit all the required documents listed below (see sample packet) to the License Division in person or email biztax@townofmedley.com

  1. Town of Medley Business Tax Receipt application
  2. Town of Medley Certificate of Use Application
  3. Miami Dade County Certificate of Use
  4. Articles of Incorporation or Fictitious Name www.sunbiz.com
  5. Copy of Driver's License of the business owner
  6. Copy of Lease, Sublease, or Deed
  7. Miami Dade Fire Annual Operating Permit
  8. Copy of State License, if applicable, (Contractors & Engineers)
  9. Copy of Miami Dade County Local Business Tax receipt, if applicable, (Contractors & Engineers)
  10. Copy of Miami Dade County Municipal Contractors license if applicable, (Contractors & Engineers)
  11. Copy of State of Florida Dept of Agriculture Food Permit, if applicable (Restaurants/ Cafeterias/ Convenient Stores/ Markets, Seafood Companies, Food and/or beverage storage & distribution companies)
  12. Copy of State of Florida Dept of Agriculture Division of Alcohol & Tobacco License, if applicable (Restaurants/ Cafeterias/ Convenient Stores/ Markets, Seafood Companies, Food and/or beverage storage & distribution companies)
    • There is an Alarm registration form in the package.
      If there is no security/burglar alarm, no need to submit this form.
    • There is a "pressure vessel" form in the package.
      On the form, there is a list of "pressure vessels".
      If there is any of this type of equipment on site, please submit 1 form per pressure vessel.
      If there are no "pressure vessels" on-site, no need to submit the form.

Please be advised that incomplete packets will not be accepted.
